Meaning of Colors: Green

Keeping with my research on colors, I am now looking at the different meanings and emotions evoked by each color. I am looking at Red, Yellow, Blue, Green, Purple, Orange, and Pink. There is a separate blog post for each color. The reason that I need to research this more is because I have never really noticed the emotional side of colors, I know the stereotypical view of certain colors, but not any real understanding about it, which if I can learn, will help enhance my designs by using every aspect of my design to show my message to my audience.

Meanings of the Color Green

The color green is now used for ecology and a verb even. Green has always been the color for growth, rebirth, and fertility. In Muslin, the "Green Man" was the symbol of fertility. In America, green is also used for envy, green behind the ears, or green around the gills. These are used for jealousy, immaturity, and nauseated.

    Global Meanings of Green

  • Universally associated with nature
  •  Symbolizes ecology and the environment
  • Traffic lights are green all over the world for Go
Green will always be associated with nature and the environment, because that everything in nature is mostly green, it has always been associated with it, especially in America where companies, schools and organizations are attempting to "Go Green".

Unique Meanings of Green in Other Cultures

  • In China, green symbolizes infidelity. Green hats symbolizes that a man's wife is cheating on him
  • In Israel, green symbolizes bad news
  • In Spain, racy jokes are "green"
Other cultures use green as different things other than just nature, its racy in Spain, and a negative color in both China and Israel, where it has a more negative connotation and is related to bad news.

Designing with the Color Green

There are actually more shades of green than any other color out there. Green can range from yellow-green, such as lime and avocado, to more blue tinged such as emerald.
Approximately 5% - 8% of men and .5% of woman are born colorblind. Most are red and green weak in their vision.
